About The DLMNG
Citizen participation and engagement are not typical hallmarks of apartment districts because renters generally do not possess a strong "sense of ownership" compared to homeowners. Consequently, the needs and desires of Downtown Lake Merritt residents and local business owners have historically been ignored by developers and city officials. As the DLMNG becomes mobilized, our neighborhood's voice will strengthen and residents will have more input into proposed changes that could either improve or diminish the vibrancy of our neighborhood.
Through neighborhood meetings, DLMNG online polls and DLMNG Message Board discussions, our group will attempt to create a picture of the advantages and disadvantages of proposed development projects and neighborhood improvements in our neighborhood so that residents can take informed positions.
We will evaluate residential and commercial projects to see whether they would harm or benefit current and future residents, and then advocate for our neighborhood by conveying our positions and opinions to Oakland city government bodies, including the Planning Board and City Council. We will ask questions such as:
- Does the project preserve the character of our
neighborhood?
- How does the project affect open space, sunlight
and shadow, traffic and parking in our neighborhood?
- Would the project benefit our community in regard
to generation of tax revenue, additional shops and stores,
and housing opportunities?
In addition to our focus on development projects, smaller-scale neighborhood-oriented improvements that improve the livability of the Downtown Lake Merritt Neighborhood are also a point emphasis for the DLMNG. Our first success was helping to obtain permit parking for Jackson and Madison Streets. We are currently initiating other neighborhood improvements, such as tree plantings, improved street lighting, and the installation of bicycle racks. Join or create a DLMNG Neighborhood Improvement Committee to help improve our neighborhood and build a sense of community.
